“An imposing cornice en route to Monarch Pass, Colorado. This was one of the most difficult days on the Continental Divide Trail due to the year's heavy snowfall and a storm that moved in quickly. I struggled on the lower slopes in deep snow (post-holing both with and without my snowshoes) and felt near hypothermic with strong winds, low temperatures and passing rain and snow. Once I worked my way around the dangerous cornice I found myself on a ridge with encouraging patches of dry ground. Despite my exposure and the purple clouds swirling around me I felt exhilarated and confident that I could make it to Monarch Pass and eventually to the mountain town of Salida, to a hostel for food and rest.”
